COAC Facilitates $20,000 of financial assistance to Lance Corporal John G. Curtin through the generous support of employees of General Reinsurance Corporation

John Gerald Curtin was born on March 12, 1990.  After graduating from Dover High School (NY) he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps active duty in October of 2009, and left for Afghanistan January 15, 2011.

Some time during the week of February 10-17, 2011, Lance Corporal John Curtin was on a mission which consisted of sweeping a house for mines and weapons.  John was the last one in and guarding the door as the rest of his platoon was sweeping the house.  John moved about a foot in the wrong direction and an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) detonated near him which led to the amputation of both of his legs above the knee, shrapnel to his torso and damage to both of his hands.  His Squad Leader, Corpsman, and Platoon saved his life.

After a few days in Germany, John was transported to the Critical Care Unit at Bethesda Naval Hospital . He was in good spirits considering his injuries and his family was with him.

John will be staying at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center for at least a year if not more. His days are now filled with rehabilitation and therapy to deal with his physical and  psychological injuries.  The presence of his family is an important element of his healing and recuperation.  Unfortunately, the family has to incur additional expenses for transportation to and from Walter Reed, food, lodging, rental cars, etc for the next year or more.

Through the generous support of employees of General Reinsurance Corporation,  Central Ohio American Charities (COAC) was able to facilitate financial assistance of more than $20,000 to John and his family.

If you would like to help us continue to support John, and others like him, we encourage you to make a tax deductible donation to COAC.  John's story should give us all perspective on the things that matter most in life.  This young man's life has been changed forever. The good news is that organizations like COAC and the support from companies like General Reinsurance at home can keep our wounded heroes going until they can return to a more independent life.
